Join the Club

The Detroit Curling Club welcomes all adults 18 years of age and older to become members. We offer a range of membership categories and affordable dues. New curlers are eligible for discounted introductory dues and Ferndale residents receive a 15 percent discount.

If you have a year or more of curling experience, you may join the club and begin curling in leagues immediately. For those with no experience curling, the first step is to attend one of our Community Education classes prior to joining the club.

Junior Curling Program

The Junior Program at the Detroit Curling Club is available for our younger curlers between 6 and 18 years of age. Participants in our program will receive instruction on sliding, delivery, sweeping, scoring, and strategy through a combination of skills drills, scrimmages, and games.

U19 (ages 11-18) – Participants in our U19 program will use full-weight regulation curling rocks which weigh approximately 40 pounds. Drop-in curling is scheduled for Sunday afternoons and Monday/Wednesday afternoons after school.

Little Rocks (ages 6-10) – Half the weight, twice the fun! Participants in the Little Rocks program can learn to curl using a specially-designed lightweight curling rock (20 pounds) and can graduate to the U19 when they are ready to use full-weight stones. Drop-in curling is scheduled for Sunday afternoons and Monday afternoons after school.

All equipment is provided, the season runs from November through March, and registration costs $240 for the entire year. Registration begins September 23, 2023.

Learn to Curl

So, you’ve seen this video: https://youtu.be/Jb6bfZFDECU

or this one: https://youtu.be/evNi4_2qHPY

and now you want to try curling. We’ve all been there. It’s both as easy as it looks and infinitely more difficult than it seems. It’s the sport that physicists can’t agree on, but children can learn to play.

If you’re up for the challenge, we have 2 beginner Learn-to-Curl program opportunities this Fall for you. Each class is divided up into three sessions. Plan on attending all three! You don’t want to miss out on any of the skills or the fun.

Details

Cost: The cost for the three-session course is $85.

What to wear: We ask that people wear warm, comfortable clothes (athletic pants and sweatshirts, hats, gloves, etc.) and bring clean tennis shoes. Ease of movement is key! Please no fleece or jeans. Someone always comes in jeans. Jeans are cold and don’t allow for the bending and flexibility that even beginner curling requires. Don’t be that person.

What to expect: The physical act of throwing a stone is unlike anything you’ve probably ever done before, so we sometimes use muscles that we didn’t know we had. We will do some stretching before we go out on the ice.

If you are afraid that you won’t be able to crouch down low to deliver the stone, stick curling may be a good option for you. No crouching is needed!!
